The German government has reacted with delight to the decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to human rights activists from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. This award honours “all those who fight for their rights and their freedom with enormous courage and at great risk,” tweeted Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
At a press conference following the EU summit in Prague, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday that it was “absolutely right” that the honourees should receive the award, adding that the courage, passion and clarity with which Memorial in Russia, the human rights lawyer Ales Bialiatski in Belarus and the Center for Civil Liberties in Ukraine are fighting for freedom and justice deserved the highest respect.
